Farmers, scientists and governments join forces
As co-initiator and project manager was Peter involved in a project of farmers' organization LTO Noord aiming at tackling climate change and its consequences in agriculture and horticulture. It was implemented in close cooperation with research partners (Wageningen University and Research), business (Grontmij) and local authorities in the north of the Netherlands (water authorities) between 2007 and 2011. It is partly based on the Agro Climate Calendar developed by WUR/Plant Sciences Group, were farmers have an insight into the changes of the frequency of occurrence of extreme weather events and their effects on crops. Adaptation measures have been inventorised and assessed for viability. The project encouraged farmers to take various measures in practice. So several farmers started with the construction of drip irrigation in the cultivation of potatoes (seed) have taken measures to conserve water to reduce drought damage.
