Fortunately the climate conference in Paris in December was a success, thanks to a thorough preparation of the French government. 4/1000 initiatives took farming seriously. It was a confirmation of the role that agriculture plays and the capturing of carbon in the soil. In 2009 I took part in the COP15 in Copenhagen. It was the first time that the Dutch experience on the theme of climate and agriculture with an international audience was shared. It was also the first time that farmers' organizations, through the then IFAP dome, showed their appreciation for a proactive strategy on this issue. It was the starting point of many international activities on this theme and two great projects in Uganda and Cambodia.
However, the policy’s adaptation has long been a spurious child in the discussion about climate change and food production too. The realization is that adaptation to climate change is absolutely necessary, and cannot wait until measures are taken to limit global warming. This is common for many people, especially farmers, "closer to home". They can get to work “tomorrow”. And that is often due to extreme and dramatic weather events.
'Paris' seems to have been a turning point. The importance of food production has been recognized. It is now important to make it happen.
Solving complex issues surrounding food production is like composing music. Working as a team of experts can make for a resounding success. This requires skill, a good plan and a clear goal. And natural affinity with farmers and other parties active in rural areas.
There are many factors that determine whether the crop in an agricultural area is successful. The dependence on the whims of the weather, the market and politics make food systems vulnerable. Climate change reinforces this effect. In this complex forum farmers are trying to find a way. Governments set the policy context, promote research and stimulate growth.
